Removals from Hammersmith to Europe.
Four countries, route-pair planned from W6. The transport out of west London is the straightforward half; the packing standard and the customs paperwork are where the work actually is.
Hammersmith to France
The closest and the most varied — Paris apartments, the northern departments, and the long run south.
How the route runs →Hammersmith to Spain
The most travelled British route in Europe, and the one where the paperwork rather than the transport decides the timing.
How the route runs →Hammersmith to Italy
Over the Alps, into traffic-restricted historic centres and buildings that frequently need a hoist.
How the route runs →Hammersmith to Portugal
Through France and the length of Spain. The furthest, and the one most changed by who is moving there now.
How the route runs →Getting out of west London
The A4 and M4 reach the M25 quickly from W6, and from there it is the M20 to Dover or the Eurotunnel terminal at Folkestone. Compared with a move leaving the South West or the North, the domestic leg barely registers.
What does register is the first hundred metres. Getting a packed load out of a fourth-floor mansion flat with a period lift, past a porter, onto a permit-controlled street, and into a vehicle is the part that takes planning — and it is identical to the planning any local W6 move needs. We treat the London end of an international move with exactly the same care.
Collections beyond London
Because loads consolidate before crossing, we are not limited to W6 pickups. Vehicles heading for a crossing collect across London as a matter of course, and we handle collections from Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow and Edinburgh on consolidated European runs.
Period furniture and export packing
W6 and Chiswick houses hold a lot of older furniture, and older furniture does not enjoy international transit. Veneers lift in humidity, joints loosen with vibration, and polished surfaces mark against blankets over a long journey.
Export packing exists for that: double-wall cartons, boarded corners, moisture control, and wrapping rather than blanketing anything with a finish. It costs more in materials and time, and it is the difference between furniture arriving and furniture arriving intact.
Customs, plainly
Household goods leaving the UK need a formal export declaration and a proper inventory, and relief on a genuine change of residence must be applied for rather than assumed. We prepare the declarations and work with agents at destination.
The thing that holds loads up is the inventory. "Household effects, various" is not an inventory. We spend the extra hour getting it right because that hour is far cheaper than a fortnight of your furniture waiting on a query.
Groupage or a dedicated vehicle
Most household moves travel as groupage. A dedicated vehicle makes sense for larger volumes, immovable dates, or where the destination needs a specific vehicle size. We will tell you which yours is rather than selling the bigger one. Transit windows depend on the crossing, consolidation and clearance, so the estimate comes with your written quote.
Staying in the UK? House removals and man and van cover the local side.
European move questions
Is west London a good place to move abroad from?
Logistically, yes. The M4 and the A4 put a vehicle on the M25 quickly, and from there it is a straight run to the M20 and the Channel. The domestic leg is short and predictable compared with most of the country. The complications on a W6 international move are at this end — mansion-block access and permits — not on the road.
Do you only collect in Hammersmith?
No. European loads consolidate before they cross, so we collect across London routinely and handle collections from Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow and Edinburgh as part of consolidated runs. Split households are common and we plan the pickups together.
What is groupage?
Your goods share a vehicle with other consignments heading the same way. It is how most household moves travel, because almost nobody fills a lorry alone. The trade-off is scheduling — the load goes when the vehicle is ready rather than the hour you finish packing.
How is export packing different?
Heavier. Goods crossing water are handled more times, sit longer in a vehicle and meet humidity changes, so cartons are double-wall, corners are boarded, soft furnishings get moisture protection and polished surfaces are wrapped rather than blanketed. For period furniture out of a W6 house it is worth the difference.
What does customs need now?
A UK export declaration, an import entry at destination, and a detailed inventory. Moving your home rather than furnishing a second property means claiming transfer-of-residence relief, which has conditions and must be evidenced. We prepare it with you.
What cannot travel?
Fuel, gas bottles, aerosols, paint, solvents and anything flammable, plus restrictions on certain foods and plants entering the EU. We send the list before you start packing.
