Small moves

Man and van in Hammersmith.

A room, a studio, a part load, one thing that will not go in a car. Quick jobs — as long as somebody has already worked out where the van is allowed to stand.

W6 produces a steady stream of small moves. Young professionals in converted flats changing address every couple of years, couples moving in together, someone buying a chest of drawers off Marketplace in Chiswick with a hatchback and misplaced optimism.

None of it needs a removal lorry. It needs a van, a couple of us, and a plan for the twenty minutes the vehicle is stationary.

What people book it for

  • A studio or one-bed flat, start to finish
  • A single room out of a shared flat or house
  • One large awkward item — sofa, wardrobe, mattress, American fridge
  • Showroom, trade-counter and marketplace collections
  • Part loads sharing a van with another job on the same route
  • The last of it, after the main removal has gone
  • Small office and studio moves behind the Broadway
  • Storage runs — things going into or out of a unit

The W6 parking problem, honestly

On a small job, arranging a formal bay suspension rarely makes sense — the paperwork costs more than the time saved. So what you are actually buying is knowledge: which streets have a loading window, which are permit-only all day, where the gyratory pushes traffic at which hour, and which riverside addresses have no vehicle access at all.

That is why we ask for the specific address rather than just the postcode, and why an early slot is usually cheaper in time than a mid-morning one.

Mansion blocks and small jobs

Worth knowing: even a single-item collection from a mansion flat may need the porter told and the lift booked. Buildings do not relax their rules because the job is small. Mention the block when you enquire and we will check.

When you have outgrown it

Past a small one-bed, a proper flat removal is cheaper in hours than doing it in van-loads, and we will tell you so rather than take the booking and watch it drag. Whole houses are on house removals.

Booking one

Both addresses, the floor at each end, the heaviest item, and roughly how much there is. If it is awkward to describe, four photos will do it — faster than a paragraph and considerably more accurate.

Man and van questions

One man or two?

Set by the heaviest item and the stairs, not the box count. A desk and some bags is one. A sofa bed off the third floor of a mansion block is not, and sending one person would waste the morning.

Can you collect from a shop or a showroom?

Yes — furniture showrooms, trade counters, King Street, the retail park at Chiswick, or somebody's flat in Acton. If there is a collection window or a reference number, put it in the notes so the run is built around it.

Is parking really the main issue?

For small jobs, yes. On a full house move a suspension is worth arranging; on a half-hour collection it is not, so the answer is timing and knowing which side streets have a legal loading window. That local knowledge is most of what you are paying for on a small job in W6.

Do you do west London generally?

We work W6, the river and Chiswick as our core, and we will run a small job out to the rest of west London where it makes sense. For a move that sits entirely in another district, there is often a network firm closer to it, and we will say so.

Will you help carry?

We carry — that is the service. What we will not do is attempt something that needs proper lifting kit with two people and optimism. We will say so and suggest the right answer instead.

Get a small move quoted

Both addresses, the floor at each end, and the heaviest item. That is usually enough.
